![]() The storm moved slowly due west during the night. The official records (Neumann, et al) of the National Hurricane Center (NHC) indicate that the 1943 Hurricane formed as a depression during the day on July 25 southeast of Burrwood Louisiana. Meteorological Aspects of the 1943 Hurricane Our intent in this short article is to document as best we can what the storm was like meteorologically, give a flavor of the impact of the storm in the Houston and Galveston area, and perhaps jog some memories of others in the hurricane business who may have come across additional data on this storm. An added historical note on this storm.the first documented intentional flight into a hurricane was accomplished as the storm moved into Houston from the Bay. Through newspaper articles, insurance reports and personal accounts found in several books on the area, we have been able to piece together what it was like to go through the storm and how much damage was caused. Perhaps because of the war and censorship of weather information, etc., we have, as of this writing, been unable to dig up much "hard official data" on the storm itself. The lack of warning and, for 1943, the high population (metropolitan area over 600,000) under the storm s path should have created considerable data on the impact. It is the only one of consequence that the center tracked directly across Galveston Bay and into Houston. ![]() While each storm is different and adds to the hurricane history of the area, the 1943 hurricane has proven to be most noteworthy to date. Our focus has been on storms prior to Carla (1961), as that storm and more recent events tend to be well documented. A continuing interest in documenting the hurricane threat to the Houston and surrounding area has led us to research the impact of hurricanes in our area. The Jhurricane killed a reported 19 people, injured hundreds and caused significant property damage ($17,000,000, COE,1972) through much of the metropolitan area. ![]() The 1915 hurricane tested the famous Galveston seawall and killed over 275 people. Newspaper accounts of the storm describe it as the "worst since 1915". With those constraints in mind, one can see why the hurricane that hit the Houston-Galveston area on Jcame without adequate warning. Aircraft reconnaissance was soon to be born.but not yet. Weather Bureau forecasters in 1943 relied almost exclusively on reports from ships at sea and land based weather offices in cities and airports for the data used to issue storm warnings. This included any reports of weather.even adverse weather such as a hurricane. Because of German U-boat activity expected in the Gulf of Mexico, all ships radio broadcasts were silenced. The nation was rightfully preoccupied with the events of the Second World War. It was in the dead of summer along the upper Texas coast. Former Houston/Galveston Area National Weather Service Meteorologist-In-Charge ![]() “Only way to prevent the restructure of the lungs is to take care of the symptoms. “If we find it in time and treat it appropriately we can prevent that structural remodeling from happening in the lungs and airways and potentially prevent patients from developing asthma to the point where the disease has progressed so significantly that we cannot reverse the changes in the structure of the lungs caused by this inflammation,” he said. Sanchez, the fact that asthma is reversible sets it apart from some other obstructive lung diseases that also damage structure in the lungs and airways. “We’re able to reverse the narrowing of the airway that’s caused by the disease if treated in time.” “For the most part, asthma is reversible,” Sanchez said. “People tend to have more symptoms during the night than during the day.”Ģ) Early treatment, controlling symptoms well can help prevent airway damage “Symptoms tend to be triggered by something, and they tend to recur as long as the trigger persists,” Sanchez said. However, not all people who have asthma have these symptoms. Sanchez said common asthma symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, feeling like one’s chest is tight, and wheezing. People with asthma can experience mild symptoms but some can experience severe, life-threatening attacks that require emergency hospital treatment. During an asthma attack, also called asthma exacerbation, the sides of the airways in lungs become swollen and inflamed and the airways shrink, making it difficult to breathe. Sanchez describes asthma as chronic inflammation of the airways in the lungs. He said treating asthma symptoms early and keeping them well controlled is important.ġ) Severity ranges from mild symptoms to life-threatening asthma attacks Sanchez said he grew up with asthma, and that’s one of the reasons why he became interested in this field. Asthma is one of Sanchez’s special interests in pulmonary medicine. Hector Sanchez, MD, is a pulmonologist, at Wilmington Health in Wilmington, North Carolina. More than 26 million people have asthma in the U.S, including about 6 million children, according to recent data.ĭr. With a process as complex as “seeing” it should come as no surprise that there are so many opportunities for making mistakes. The process of “seeing” is complex and the chain has anatomical, physiological, neuropsychological and psycho-emotional components. Most workers agree that if a radiologist is given only “positive” images to comment upon, an error rate of 30% occurs, but with a mix of normal and abnormal cases, representing usual clinical practice, the rate declines to about 4%. ![]() Some of the techniques are particularly prone to errors these include chest X-rays, with a “miss rate” of 20-50%, and mammography, with a “miss rate” of up to 75%. Spinner dolphin prey species follow a vertical and horizontal migration pattern, staying in deep waters in the ocean during the day, and then moving up in the water column (vertical migration) and inshore (horizontal migration) at night. Spinner dolphins feed at night on species including small fish, shrimp, and squid that are found about 650 to 1,000 feet below the surface of the water. Researchers take photographs of the dolphins' dorsal fins and then match the shape, nicks, and notches in each fin to a catalog of known individuals to obtain life history information for each animal. Individual dolphins are identified by their unique dorsal fins. The three-part color region consists of a dark gray dorsal/back cape, a light gray side, and a white belly.
